6 Summer Hair Problems And Their Solutions
Summer is here! But the heat can wreak havoc on your hair…
From dryness and frizz to color fading, the blazing sun can upset your scalp and locks. Today, we are discussing a few of these common hair concerns and how you can tackle them! Stop the problems before the damage starts, and keep your locks shiny and healthy all summer long.
#1 Dryness
We welcome the seasonal heat, but we are not so keen for its tendency to cause dry hair! Nourishing shampoo, conditioner, and hair treatments, like our Jasmine Moisturizing Shampoo and Argan Oil Finishing Spray, can help you combat those dry locks. These delightful hair products will infuse moisture into your hair and keep it soft, healthy, and silky smooth.
Dry hair often comes with a dry scalp. Try some scalp-detoxifying serum or scalp-purifying scrub. It helps strengthen your scalp’s skin barrier and restore its moisture level by providing gentle exfoliation. It helps dissolve impurities, product build-up, and dead skin cells too. These products can be used once a week in place of your shampoo. You’ll be left feeling refreshed as well as stronger, healthier and fuller-looking hair.
#2 Greasy Hair
Here’s the other end of the spectrum to dryness: grease. Oh boy, greasy hair. And we can all blame sebum for it. Sebum is your skin’s natural moisturizer and its production increases in the warmer months. This is what leads to greasy-looking hair. If you can relate to this summertime woe, and you are washing your hair every day in the summer, we are here to tell you not to.
Over-washing your hair and the skin on your scalp can increase sebum production even more! Bad news. Over-washing your hair prompts the overproduction of sebum since your scalp dries out after every wash. Instead, try using dry shampoo, it will absorb excess oil to help keep greasiness in check. You can also try using different scalp-detoxifying scrub or serum to re-balance the skin on your scalp. Try your best to resist the temptation and only wash your hair every 3 or 4 days. Your hair and your scalp will thank you for that!
#3 Color Fading
Another very common summer hair concern is sun-bleached hair. According to Dr. Annie Gonzalez, a board-certified dermatologist, “Sun bleaches out the melanin in hair, which is what causes it to become lighter… It might seem strange that the sun lightens hair but tans skin. This is because skin is alive and hair is dead. The ultraviolet rays in sunlight oxidize the hair, turning it into a compound that is colorless.”
Help protect yourself from the color-leaching rays with color-protecting shampoo and conditioner. Many of these products also contain a UV-protective filter which helps you defend your hair from those damaging rays while you enjoy the warm weather. Use the products each time you wash your hair for vibrant and healthy-looking hair (remember not to wash your hair every day).
#4 Frizziness
Warm air retains more water particles, which is why summertime is always more humid than colder months. And with humidity comes with – not all but for some – the misery of frizzy hair. You can tame the frizz with oil-infused shampoo and conditioner, such as those that contain argan oil or babassu oil. You can also use leave-in concentrate to nourish your hair between washes to help keep your hair soft and frizz-free. (Oh, and don’t wash your hair every day, or you’ll make it worse.
#5 Chlorine-Damaged Hair
Ah, there’s nothing better than a cool dip on a hot day. The problem? Swimming pools can be bad news for your hair. Green hair, brittle hair, and even hair loss can all be consequences of exposing your locks to high chlorine levels. Damage-repairing shampoo and re-hydrating conditioner are excellent for nourishing your fragile strands and helping smooth and fortify your hair fiber.
If you want to up your game, have you tried a leave-in damage-repairing and re-hydrating treatment, or our Argan Oil Spray Treatment? These products are deeply moisturizing and help strengthen hair that is weakened or damaged by the sun. You can apply these products daily for happier-looking hair.
#6 Limp Locks
For some, the summer heat and humidity can cause their hair to look sad. If your hair looks limp and lifeless, we have a few tricks for you to try.
First, avoid using too many leave-in treatments and masks as the product build-ups might weigh down your hair even more.
Second, stop touching your hair. Pop a comb in your bag for touch-ups instead. Our hands produce oil, so we are making the hair even more greasy every time we touch it.
Third, get a layered haircut. This one almost never fails. Sharp ends can make an effortlessly full look and they can frame oval or round faces well. On the style side, you can also try a diagonal part, which can give your hair the appearance of thicker, more voluminous hair.
